I circled the interior of my tree trunk in it’s entirety, over and over, round and round; My feet eliciting small clouds of dust with each step. My mind was reeling…anyone watching could see my maw working in a silent argument with myself, orbs flicking this way and that…trying to decipher the dream i’d just had. The dust began to annoy. With a flick of my tail the power of air sent the dust flying back to the ground, clearing the air immediately. I snorted lightly before making my way to the craggy mouth of my home, my redwood.
The morning sun was casting angel rays between the bows of the giant trees we called home. I watched them, curious. I wondered what it would be like to stand in a field with uninterrupted sun warming my back. I hadn't left these lands in years, since I was a child, and with no clearing to be found in this dense, protective forest…sun was scarce. To feel it’s warmth one must choose a ray and move their bodies to concentrate it on one spot or another. No sun bathing here. I had grown accustomed to this through my years here, but I can’t say I don't miss the quiet enjoyment of napping in the sun.
I brought my attention back to the present, taking a moment to feel the air. My element. I breathed in deeply…pulling the air around me into a wind, lifting my long tresses away from my neck and sending my plume in a line out behind me. So refreshing. I dropped the breeze, and took a moment to take in the mood of the birds and wild life this morning. Harks swiveled, picking up an anxious energy of fast chattering birds. I could sense no other wild life…no foxes or bears…no wolves. I knew why.
Foulgrin’s army was growing, and from what I’d heard Tucker’s was as well. Many creatures of the land were taking shelter. This is what my dream had been about. Even in the seclusion and protection of our forest I knew the time was coming. I could feel the buzz in my bones. I would have to emerge. I had to see Tucker and get a read on how he was doing. I’d been hearing rumors of a madness brewing within him. I couldn’t bare the thought. I also knew a new Indifferent Queen, Nerina, had just been crowned after the death of her father. I still regretted not emerging for his funeral. I hoped he understood…if he was even aware. I hoped Nerina would understand as well. The majority of the land thought us all dead…us feathers. I don't know if Nerina even realizes I really am alive. Im sure rumors have been picking up with the hard days brewing. Regardless I hope she has a good enough head on her shoulders to understand the predicament we find ourselves in and to not begrudge me my social discrepancies.
There are only 11 of us including me, 11 Feather horses left. We have taken no mates in our years here and have remained completely secluded for fear of permanent extinction. We are reaching a critical point here…and it is time to make a decision on how best to move forward. I need to be sure and keep the best interested of all of us in mind. This isn't just about me.
I snorted, trotting a few steps away from my tree, into the quiet forest floor. My footsteps sound muffled and hollow on the decaying foliage. I spoke
“ Soefeia….Come to me…”
Soefeia, my beta, was my true ally in all this. The rest of the herd was close to me as well..we had no choice but to be. Soef however, got all of me. She knew my deepest fears and secrets and routinely helped me work out a course of action. All great leaders have advisors…and though our situation is tedious, I am no different.
